Instagram made me buy it - and it became one of the kickstarters of my big come back to the world of reading. I have gotten through it back in April, during my not so glamorous time of catching chickenpox as an adult. Needed something to take my mind off the… itch.
Lexie’s quick review:
The more in depth and “why” review below.
Fantasy: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hunger Games: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (I really think there was a lot of inspiration taken from Hunger Games)
Really stupid decisions: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Romance: ⭐️⭐️
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (I read it in 5 days)
Here’s why:
Powerless is one of the books that made me check what was the age of the author while they were writing it (and I was right!).
I liked the style of writing, although opening the book I quickly realised that I am unsure what the first word means... The font was bad enough for me to finally learn the character's name a bit further in the book just to finally see it in a normal font. (At which time I showed it to my sister, and we both made an "ooooh" sound realising the first letter was a "P").
In full disclosure… I thought of it as… Paeduii, Paedyii, Paedun, Daeoun, Paeoun…
That wasn't a problem though. The story goes pretty fast, there's action, emotions, and a couple of more used tropes. It's generally a nice, quick read (I got through the book in 5 days and I am a slow reader). I liked the concept, loved the idea of a virus or whatever made everyone have powers. This factor and the general world-building were great. The love story and bickering was funny, some of the things said made me laugh, which is an absolute win.
Yet at one point I sat there thinking "can we go through it already?".
What I did not like was that the whole book had a “bit” Hunger Games Vibe. Not just a slight vibe... More like... Hunger Games: 30/10. It happened 3 times. The concept, interviews, dresses(?), dress-makers, even the interviewers hair.
Did you read it? And how did you like it?
